Three schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school district in Winston-Salem, North Carolina are compared with regard to violent behaviors and recidivism of violence. With organizational empowerment and collaborative school/student improvement teams involving parents, School A has reduced the number of violent offenders through remedial/enrichment programs, self-monitoring, parent/teacher monitoring, peer tutoring, and after school care. Empowerment modeling is shown to be predictive of recidivism of violence at the elementary grade level. Chi-square analysis is used to relate achievement scores, poverty measures and violent behavior patterns. Early identification of students at risk for violent behaviors and recidivism of violence is cost effective for schools and important for educational and social reasons. As chronic misbehavior and violence in elementary school may lead to juvenile crime and delinquency, it is the school that is able to identify at risk children through a district data-bank that is then able to provide the necessary support programs to prevent a future of crime later on in life for those children.
